UNCCD's European launch of 'Decade for Deserts' PDF Print E-mail
Written by Erik van den Elsen
ImageThe United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Center (UNEP-WCMC) and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) will be launching the United Nations Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification (2010-2020) on Thursday, 16 December 2010, in London, UK (UNDDD launch website). The half-day event will feature a seminar with world-class experts and policy-makers speaking to the issues of land degradation in the drylands, followed by a press conference.

The objective of the Regional Launch of the Decade in Europe is to engage the key actors in Europe to promote the long-term sustainability of drylands and desert ecosystems and to boost efforts to combat desertification in the European context. The speakers, drawn from the United Nations, civil society organizations, business and academia will consider, in the context of the Decade's span: the best and worst cases for deserts and drylands with regard to Europe; what Europe needs to do to reach the best case; the perils of inaction for Europe more specifically, and for the rest of the world; the role of the drylands in Europe and for global sustainability. An underlying assumption is that a decade is time enough for positive change.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 2010 to 2020 as the Decade to promote action to secure the sustainability of the drylands. This is a window of opportunity to make our voices heard and to mobilize latent groups that can make critical changes to ensure drylands regain and maintain value for humanity.
