WB3 Documentation Contest: Winners Elected! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Erik van den Elsen

ImageGood documentation of your local experience is not only worthwhile for future implementation - you can also use it to enter a contest! Your study site team could qualify to win a DESIRE site visit!

This is the slogan with which the Study Site Documentation Contest was introduced by Working Block 3 coordinator Gudrun Schwilch, in the spring of 2008. The purpose of the contest was to stimulate the study sites to put maximum effort into documenting at least 3 technologies and approaches for remediating their local Desertification problems, using the WOCAT basic questionnaires.

A panel of 4 experts selected the following winners of the contest:

  1. Spain (Guadalentin Basin study site - EEZA-CSIC)
  2. Morocco (Mamora/Sehoul study site - University Mohamed V)
  3. Portugal (Macao study site - University of Aveiro)

All three winners: Congratulations! on behalf of the DESIRE coordination team and the rest of the consortium! You did a great job.

Besides having documented a number of technologies very nicely, these winners have also submitted well documented approaches, which only a few other sites have managed to do. The ranks are sometimes very close and generally it can be said, that many sites have made a major effort to document interesting technologies and approaches in a mostly comprehensive manner.

Finally 8 study sites teams submitted their documentation material for in total 9 sites: China, Greece-Crete, Greece-Nestos, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey (2 sites).

The panel of experts who assessed the contributions, consisted of:

1. Gudrun Schwilch (CDE, WB3 leader and WOCAT expert),
2. Hanspeter Liniger (CDE, WOCAT expert),
3. Jean Poesen (Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium - department of Earth and Environmental Sciences),
4. Rudi Hessel (Alterra, DESIRE coordination team member).

The documentation has been ranked between 1 and 5 for each criterion (as indicated in the announcements). The performance sheets summarize the results of all the technologies and approaches which were submitted and which were assessed by two reviewers each and independently. The study site performance sheets (seperately available as pdf document) can be downloaded as a combined ZIP file by clicking HERE (all site visitors).

The database with all the documented technologies and approaches (including those from study sites not participating in the contest) are available from the WB3 download pages in the download section, or can be downloaded directly by clicking HERE (registered users only).
