Institute Description

Institute full name:

UNESCO Chair for Spatial Planning and the Environment

Institute acronym:

UNESCO Chair

Institute profile:

(UNESCO Chair is providing a contribution in-kind to the project by releasing staff to conduct interviews as part of socio-economic modeling work in WB5.)

The UNESCO Chair for the Environment was set up at the Rey Juan Carlos University following the agreement signed on the 22nd October 2001 between this university and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The UNESCO Chair for the Environment is therefore integrated within the structure of the Rey Juan Carlos University and the UNITWIN International Program of UNESCO Chairs, which aims to favour the mobility of the academia, and the transfer of knowledge and other mechanisms of cooperation amongst universities.
Consultancy and research constitute the main activities of the Chair. The main areas of interest are International Conventions and Environment, Biodiversity, Marine Environment, Biosafety, Landscape, Environmental Ethics and Sustainability, Environmental Law, Environmental Information, Waste, Degraded Land, Nature Conservation, and Energy Policies. It is particularly remarkable the experience of the Chair in (i) the development of impact analysis; (ii) the development of socioeconomic studies; (iii) the design and evaluation of environmental policies; and, (iv) the provision of support to public entities in the negotiation of international environmental conventions and agreements.

The Chair?s team is made up of professionals with degrees in Law (specialized in Environmental Law) and Environmental Sciences, as a result of which the department provides the multidisciplinary experience required for managing complex environmental issues.
